For the past few years, Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) has held a 5K race to benefit its educational foundation with proceeds going towards student needs such as scholarships, text books, and more. The course runs around LFCC’s Middletown Campus and along a part of a nature trail that circles around part of the college. Being an employee of LFCC I have taken photographs of the race on and off for a few years. However with our family getting into running this year, I decided to participate this time around with Caitlin joining me.
Weather wise it was a yucky day. During the whole race there was a constant rain. While I have no problem with any type of weather for running, I was concerned with how Caitlin would handle it. We decided to run the race together due to the weather. Not only did she handle it well, but she really embraced running in the rain. She also learned the benefit of running with a hat to keep rain out of your face (I gave her mine to run with) and the importance of always bringing a second pair of socks along to change into post race.
Caitlin had a great finishing time of 32:36, placing 33 out of 97 and 1st in the age group of 10 and under. She was also second in the 19 and under age group. When I asked her what her favorite part of the race was, she replied getting her photo taken with LFCC’s mascot, Leo the Lion, and of course getting her place medal from LFCC’s president Dr. Cheryl Thompson-Stacy.
